3-Row Luxury SUV Comparison
Lexus TX vs Acura MDX vs Volvo XC90: Which Three-Row Luxury SUV Fits Your Family?
If your family has outgrown a two-row SUV, the short list usually comes down to three names: the Lexus TX, the Acura MDX and the Volvo XC90. All three seat up to seven and wear a luxury badge. They feel very different once the third row is full and the cargo area is packed for a weekend away.
Our team at Thompson Lexus Willow Grove put the 2027 TX side by side with the latest Acura MDX and Volvo XC90 so Montgomery County drivers can compare space, power, technology and ownership costs in one place, then see the TX in person just off the PA Turnpike.

03 Space & Seating
Third-Row Room, Car Seats and Cargo
The Third Row Is Where the TX Pulls Ahead
The TX's back row is sized for full-grown passengers, not only kids. With 33.5 inches of legroom, it offers several more inches than the MDX and more than the XC90, and a slide-assist second row makes it easier to climb back there.
The difference shows up again at the tailgate. With all three rows up, the TX holds 20.2 cubic feet of cargo, enough for a double stroller plus weekend duffels, or the lacrosse bags after practice. That is more room than the MDX and roughly double the XC90 in the same configuration.
Second-row captain's chairs, heated and ventilated on select grades, turn the TX into a six-seater with a walkway to the back. A 60/40 bench keeps seating at seven. Compare both layouts on our 2027 Lexus TX page.
04 Performance & Efficiency
Gas, Hybrid or Plug-In: How the Powertrains Compare
These three take very different approaches under the hood, and the right one depends on how and where you drive.
Lexus TX
The TX 350 uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 275 horsepower, available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The TX 500h F SPORT Performance pairs that turbo engine with a hybrid system for 366 horsepower, 406 lb-ft of torque and DIRECT4 all-wheel drive. The battery recharges from the engine and from braking, so there is no cord or charging station involved.
For 2027, Lexus retired the TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid. If a plug-in is on your list, ask us about remaining 2026 TX 550h+ availability, or explore the Lexus TX Hybrid.
Acura MDX and Volvo XC90
The MDX sticks with V6 power: a 290-horsepower 3.5-liter in most trims and a 355-horsepower turbocharged V6 in the Type S. It does not offer a hybrid.
The XC90 uses turbocharged four-cylinder engines with mild-hybrid assist, plus the T8 plug-in hybrid rated at 455 horsepower with up to 33 miles of electric driving. That plug-in setup suits short commutes when you can charge at home, and it comes at the highest starting price of the three.
05 Technology & Safety
Family Safety and Everyday Tech
Standard on Every 2027 TX
- Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, now with Curve Speed Management for the adaptive cruise control
- Digital Latch with Safe Exit Assist, which can help keep a door from opening into passing traffic or cyclists
- 14-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- 12.3-inch digital instrument display and a wireless charger
All three SUVs come with a full suite of driver-assist features. The TX stands out for how much is standard from the base grade up, and for Safe Exit Assist, a feature that matters when kids are hopping out in a school pickup line.
06 Cost of Ownership
Warranty Coverage and Long-Term Value
Purchase price is only part of the story with a family SUV you plan to keep. The TX and MDX share the same 4-year/50,000-mile basic and 6-year/70,000-mile powertrain coverage. The XC90's powertrain coverage runs 4 years/50,000 miles.
If you choose the TX 500h, Lexus covers the hybrid battery for 10 years or 150,000 miles. Many new Lexus vehicles also come with complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first two services. Our team can walk you through exactly what is included with your TX.
Lexus has built its reputation on dependability and a well-cared-for ownership experience, and that tends to show up when it is time to trade in. Thinking about what your current SUV is worth? Get started with Sell Us Your Vehicle.

07 Life in Montgomery County
Built for Turnpike Trips, Winter Mornings and Carpool Runs
Families in Willow Grove, Abington, Horsham, Hatboro, Huntingdon Valley and Jenkintown put a lot of miles on a three-row SUV. Weekday mornings mean school drop-offs and Route 611 traffic. Weekends can mean a run down to the Shore or up the Northeast Extension to the Poconos with skis on the roof.
Available all-wheel drive, standard on the TX 500h, adds confidence on snowy Montgomery County mornings. Trail Mode on the TX 350 AWD and TX 500h helps on loose gravel at a campground or a snowy driveway. The third row and cargo space mean nobody has to leave the hockey bag or the cooler behind.
Our dealership sits on Maryland Road in Willow Grove, close to the PA Turnpike and Route 611, so a test drive fits into a lunch break. Get directions and hours.

09 The Verdict
Our Take: Where the Lexus TX Comes Out Ahead
The Acura MDX makes sense for drivers who rarely use the third row and want the lowest entry price. The Volvo XC90 appeals to families who can charge at home and want electric-only commuting. For families who use all three rows and still need room for gear, the Lexus TX offers the most third-row legroom and cargo space of the three, a no-plug hybrid option and long hybrid battery coverage.
The best way to decide is to put your own family in the seats. Bring the car seats, the stroller and the kids, and see how each row fits.
